Many have fond experiences of visiting aquariums that are home to large marine mammals and other exotic fish, but do you know how the water is maintained? Water quality is crucial for the health of marine life. Fish and marine mammals that live in aquariums produce toxins that release into surrounding water.

Ozone in Large Aquariums
One example of aquariums taking advantage of the strong disinfecting powers of ozone is at Marineland in Ontario, Canada.
Marineland describes why they have chosen to use ozone over other chemicals, “Here at Marineland, we use ozone to maintain a high level of water quality for our marine mammals - without the high residual chlorine levels that were required in the past. The advantage of ozone disinfection as compared to chlorine disinfection is multiple.”
They continue, “Ozone is a more effective disinfectant than chlorine and removes viruses and lowers the color and turbidity. Ozone also removes suspended solids. Unlike chlorine, ozone does not change the pH of the water, nor does it react with the remaining organics in the water to form carcinogenic trihalomethane.”
How does ozone work?
Marineland describes how ozone use in their tanks works to keep the water clean without the use of other harmful chemicals: “Ozone is a colorless gas that is formed by passing oxygen through an electric field. The rate and efficiency of ozone production is affected by many variables such as air flow, percent of oxygen in gas feed, dew point of gas feed, air pressure, cooling water temperature, voltage and frequency applied to electrodes.”
Because of its short half-life, ozone will decay to pure oxygen soon after it is produced. The half-life of ozone in water is about 30 minutes, which means that every half hour the ozone concentration will be reduced to half its initial concentration.
