How to Use an Ozone Generator for Hunting November 13 2017, 0 Comments

Scent control is an important technique used by hunters to give them an advantage over deer or other animals while in the woods. Hunters that don’t successfully block their scent can give away their location. Many hunters already have an intricate routine to block their scent, which could include clothing and hygiene. Adding ozone to this routine can eliminate smells deer may be sensitive to giving you the advantage.

How does it work?

When ozone gas is introduced to an environment with bacteria, mold or any other organic material, it readily donates one of its three oxygen atoms to oxidize or destroy that material. Once the third oxygen atom is used to oxidize an organic or inorganic contaminant, there is only an oxygen (O2) molecule left. The result is an extremely effective deodorizer that does not leave any chemical residue behind.

For hunting, ozone can be used multiple ways. One common way A2Z Ozone products are utilized is to reduce the scent of hunting clothing. Some may resort to scent-free soaps when bathing or scent-free containers to transport clothing. Ozone reduces the need for these additional steps because it is 3,000 times more effective than bleach at destroying organic materials, including odors.

A2Z Ozone's personal use units are designed to produce just the right amount of ozone to effectively sanitize your water and air, but not strong enough to exceed recommended EPA levels. The current EPA standard for in-air ozone is .05 ppm. Keep in mind, ozone has a 20-30 minute half-life in the air meaning that its concentration will break down quickly.

Ozonating hunting clothing:

  • For smaller objects, such as clothing, get a plastic tote
  • Next, cut a hole for the exhaust of the unit to fit in and
  • Cut another hole for excess gas to escape
  • Then, run the unit for 30 minutes or less
  • Make sure the fan is on a high setting

Ozone in the tree stand:

Another effective way to use an ozone generator is in the tree stand. The ozone generator can be positioned to produce ozone in the direction the wind is carrying the hunter’s scent. Using this method, the ozone is projected downwind and works to mask your smell and location. North American Whitetail says, “Although ozone itself has a smell, the probability that a deer will detect it, and then react to it, is low.”

Getting Results

An experiment conducted by Field & Stream demonstrated the advantages of hunting with ozone. A trained tracking police dog was used to estimate the success ozone would have in masking the smell of a hunter.

During the control test, the dog found the target in only 14 seconds. When ozone was used to deodorize the clothing of the target, the dog took 42 seconds. When using a portable ozone generator, the dog took 50 seconds to find the target. “Yet the addition of ozone confused that nose for nearly one minute, which amazed everyone,” Field & Stream wrote.

Hunters themselves have also experienced the benefits of ozone firsthand. Bowhunter Magazine writes, “My ozone epiphany occurred one warm morning in early season after cleaning a deer. I had managed to thoroughly coat my pants, shirtsleeves, and rubber boots in blood, and the rest of my clothes in heavy sweat during the long, hot drag back to my truck. This putrid combination of contaminates was literally cleansed from my duds by a 35-minute treatment of ozone in a sealed garment bag while I ate lunch.”

For portability, we recommend:

  • The Aqua-6 Multi-Purpose Ozone Generator, which produces 600 mg/hr ozone output, is a diverse unit that is ideal for hunting. This unit is exceptionally easy to use and reliable, making it our best-seller for nearly 10 years. The 15-setting timer makes air treatment incredibly simple as the device will release ozone periodically based on your needs. The Aqua-6 is compact and lightweight, weighing only 1.7 pounds.

  • The Aqua-8 Multi-Purpose Ozone Generator is another portable model that can be taken on the go. This device is slightly more powerful than the Aqua-6, producing 800 mg/hour. The unit also features an 18-setting timer that can release ozone on a schedule. Additionally, this unit can stand freely on its own or be wall-mounted. The ozone upgrade for the Aqua-8 does not impact portability, as this unit is only 2 pounds.

For more intense odors, we recommend the Air Series. These units are more powerful and should only be used in unoccupied areas:

  • The A7K Air Ozone Generator is the highest quality and best odor remover available on the market. This unit is designed to powerfully shock treat a room suffering from mold, mildew, and strong smoke or odor damage. The A7K is extremely powerful and uses dual plate activation to produce 7000mg or 3500mg/hr ozone output.
  • The Air-7000 Air Ozone Generator is a 7000mg/hour heavy-duty cold corona discharge ozone generator that functions as a deodorizer designed to oxidize smells, odors, viruses and mold from the air. This device lacks some of the premium features of the A7K, including remote control and repeat timer.

  • The Air-3500 Air Ozone Generator is a 3500mg/hour heavy-duty cold corona discharge ozone generator that functions as a deodorizer designed to oxidize smells, odors, viruses and mold from the air. This unit is equipped with the same features as its more powerful counterpart, the Air-7000.
