How to Remove Skunk Odors

Fall is quickly approaching and that means it’s very likely you will smell or encounter a skunk this season. Iowa State University says, “Striped skunks typically have litters of 4 to 6 young born between May and June. The young stay with the female until fall, when they begin to disperse in search of their own territories and winter den sites. This behavior, known as the “fall shuffle” puts roaming skunks at risk, increasing encounters with humans, our pets, and predators.”

How to remove skunk odors in the home

Knowing how to get rid of the smell is important as skunk season approaches. If skunk odor has impacted your home, follow these steps to eliminate the odor with an ozone generator:

  1. First, treat the individual room that has the worst odor

  2. Before turning on your unit, remove all valuables, plants, and/or pets from the room so they do not come into direct contact with ozone

  3. Second, you will need to determine the severity of the smell, which will dictate the amount of time needed for cleaning

  4. For example, heavy smoke smells will require longer treatment times (4 hours or more), while less severe smells could be solved in a shorter amount of time (4 hours or less)
  5. Next, place the unit into the severely impacted room

  6. Once you have treated each room individually, you can treat the whole house using the AC method
  7. To begin this method, determine where the air return vent is on your heating and cooling system
  8. Remove the filter and turn the AC fan ON
  9. Place your unit in front of or near the return vent and be sure the heating and cooling system’s fan is to the always on position
  10. You will then need to turn on your unit for the 4-hour cycle and immediately exit the building
  11. It will be safe to return to the building at a minimum of 4.5 hours later, but we recommend returning 5 hours later or longer
  12. Keep in mind, the half-life of ozone is 30 minutes
  13. If the smell of ozone is still strong after this amount of time has passed, open windows to air out the building

How to remove skunk odors from furniture

If a piece of furniture has been infected by skunk odor, follow these steps:

  1. To start, you will need an ozone generator and a tarp
  2. Once you have decided which item to ozonate first you will need to take the tarp and drape it over the item
  3. Lay something to help hold down the tarp on the sides which will help hold in the ozone
  4. Then, take the ozone generator and place the exhaust side under the tarp making sure the air vents aren’t covered and are able to pull fresh air in
  5. You will then need to turn on your unit with both plates running, with the fan on high, and with a 30-minute run cycle
  6. Exit the house at this point or have this set up in a garage
  7. Once the cycle is complete, wait 30 minutes to 1 hour for the ozone to dissipate, then you can enter the area and decide if another treatment is needed

If you are trying to ozonate a smaller object you would need to get a plastic tote and cut a hole for the exhaust of the unit to fit in and another for excess gas to escape. Then run the unit for 30 minutes or less with the fan on a high setting.

How to remove skunk odors from cars

If your car has been infected with skunk odor, follow these steps:

  1. To treat your car with ozone you will need an ozone generator capable of air sanitization and an extension cord
  2. Before beginning, place your car near a power outlet or have an extension cord that will reach the vehicle
  3. First, crack the passenger window far enough for the power cord to fit in
  4. Then, place your unit on the passenger front floorboard
  5. Next, turn your car A/C on with the recirculation turned on
  6. Turn on your unit for 15 minutes and allow the car to circulate the ozone through the cooling system to help oxidize smells and allergens in the cooling vents
  7. After the ozonation process is complete, wait 30 minutes for the ozone to dissipate
  8. Your car should be smelling fresh now, but if you can still smell the odors you were trying to eliminate repeat the process

Note: Be sure to only use your ozone generator in an unoccupied area. Our units produce high amounts of ozone. It is not safe to run the unit in an occupied area for more than 1 minutes. Be sure to remove any valuable items, pets and/or plants before you use the ozone generator. Do not breathe in ozone directly.
