How not to spring clean

With summer fast approaching, my sister Janet took last week off and cleaned her house from floor to ceiling. She scrubbed walls. She wiped down cupboards and cleaned garbage pails inside and out. Finally, she bleached the tiles and grout. I don’t fault her for spring cleaning. But she didn’t do it with ozonated water. And, she didn’t freshen/sanitize the air for pesky hidden pathogens.

MP 1000 Multi-Purpose Generator

It starts with our MP-1000

Janet could have started out by sanitizing the air with the MP-1000 Multi Purpose Ozone Generator. To set this up, she would simply remove all houseplants, people, and pets from the home. Then, she would cover valuables with a sheet or remove from the home.

She could use several different methods to ozonate a room

She could put the unit in the middle of the room and turn the machine on; alternatively, she would have more control over the settings if she set the ozone generator outside of the door and placed the tubing under the door to ozonate. With this method, it is important to put down some plastic underneath the opening of the tubing to protect any carpeting/flooring from damage. Also note to block the airways under the door so that the ozone does not leak out of the room.

Or, get the whole house at once

Another method she could do to the whole house would be to place the ozone generator near the intake duct of her air conditioning unit. Then, put on the fan of her unit (not her air conditioning or heating) and allow the ozone to flow throughout her home. This method will rid her vents of any odors, as well. She can set the timer for up to four hours.

For Any Method, Leave the Home and Take Your Pets/Plants/Valuables With Her!

She would leave the home—ozone at this level is toxic to living beings. After the four hours of ozonating time, Janet would wait about three or four hours to return, allowing the ozone to return back to regular oxygen. She could repeat this process if necessary. When completed, her home would have been be truly sanitized. The fresh, clean smell would have made it apparent!

*Note, these times will vary for different unit types. These estimated times are for the MP-1000 only. With any room size, the ozonating can take longer if the room is highly contaminated. With this case, a repeat on 4 hours is ideal. Allow the ozone generator to sit for 30 minutes before running again. For a more effective cleaning of mold and mildew, a stronger machine is needed.

As you can see from the above chart, the degree of contamination also determines how long she would need to ozonate a room. Note, for high contamination, such as a room damaged by smoke from a fire, it takes a more powerful unit, like the MP 8000 Multi-Purpose Ozone Generator. Alternatively, the A7K Air Ozone Generator would work if she only wanted to ozonate the air in her room. It will not hurt to ozonate a smaller room at a longer time. Janet would have decided to be on the safe side and ozonated for four hours. When she came four hours later, she would have been impressed with the way the home smelled.

Washing floor to ceiling with ozonated water

While ozonating air is important, it does not remove solid waste on surfaces. So, the very next day, Janet could have begun her cleaning spree. After having sanitized the air in the home, Janet could have used the MP 1000 Multi-Purpose Ozone Generator to ozonate some water and use it for cleaning. Everything she cleaned this week would have been sanitized even better than using those leading brands of cleaners that contain harsh chemicals and leave a film behind—by just using plain, ozonated water!

Begin with ozonating water for washing

She would have begun her day by getting a clean, large bowl of water. Then, Janet could have taken the MP 1000 Multi Purpose Ozone Generator and connected one side of the tubing to the unit, and the other side of the tubing to a diffuser stone. After getting the unit ready, she could have placed the stone into the water about four inches deep. It would have been important for her to keep the unit above the bowl so that water does not leak back into the ozone generator. After turning on the unit, a gallon bowl of water set at 100 would take about 20 minutes to ozonate. While waiting, she could have had breakfast, started some laundry and drank her morning coffee. When finished, she would simply transfer the bowl of water into a gallon bucket for cleaning.

Wipe down surfaces

Then, she could have wiped down surfaces as if she were using a disinfectant she bought at the store; she could have washed her walls and floors, wiped down cupboards, and cleaned garbage pails with ozonated water. This would have disinfected surfaces in her home and left everything sparkling clean.

The benefits of Spring Cleaning with Ozone

If everything in Janet’s home had been truly disinfected, she would experience fewer bouts of allergy symptoms. Her pets would, too. Odors from smoke, stale kitchen grease and burnt spice would have been zapped. And those glorious pet smells -- she loves her pets but not the odors--they would be gone, too.
